Debunking Common CBD Myths

In recent years, CBD has exploded onto the mainstream scene. But along with its rapidly growing popularity, CBD is accompanied by a slew of myths and misunderstanding. Let’s discuss some of the most common CBD myths and provide clarification – so you can make the most informed decision for your own body and wellness.

Myth: CBD Will Get You High

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid (a naturally occurring chemical derived from the Cannabis sativa plant). You cannot get “high” from CBD. But the confusion stems from a closely related cannabinoid called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which does have an intoxicating effect and can get you “high.” But why do these cannabinoids react so differently when ingested? This is because CBD and THC interact with different parts of our endocannabinoid system – a complex network of cannabinoid receptors throughout the body. THC has been shown to activate the CB1 receptor in the brain, which is responsible for intoxicating effects. On the other hand, CBD has been shown to have no effect on the CB1 receptor. In fact, some research has shown CBD interferes with CB1 activation – meaning it may reduce the effect of THC on the brain. Bōdee Organics products do not contain any THC. They are non-intoxicating.

Myth: CBD is a Miracle Cure

At some point in your CBD journey, you’ll likely encounter other consumers or marketing that present CBD as a magical panacea. As wonderful as it sounds, CBD cannot cure every ailment known to humankind. You should not use CBD as a replacement for doctor-prescribed medication.

Myth: CBD is Snake Oil

With that said, there are thousands of people who use CBD every day to find balance, reduce discomfort and enhance their wellness routines. There are scientific studies discussing CBD’s potential benefits. While many of these findings haven’t been confirmed by the FDA, they offer promise for the future of natural alternatives. An exception is Epidiolex, the first and currently only FDA-approved prescription CBD treatment, prescribed to treat severe seizure conditions, Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Dravet syndrome. Bōdee Organics products combine CBD with other enhancing ingredients, such as curcumin, vitamin B12, matcha or valerian root to deliver a host of wellness benefits.

Myth: Hemp-Derived CBD and Marijuana-Derived CBD Are the Same

When shopping around for CBD, you’ll want to make a distinction between hemp-derived CBD and marijuana-derived CBD. Hemp-derived CBD is guaranteed to have 0.3% or less of THC and is usually made from industrial hemp. It may contain additional cannabinoids like CBN or CBG (but no THC), producing a broad-spectrum product. Marijuana-derived CBD may contain additional cannabinoids like CBN, CBG and THC, producing a full-spectrum product. Hemp and marijuana are both the Cannabis sativa species, but different cultivars. Hemp is frequently used to describe cannabis with 0.3% or less THC, and marijuana is often used to describe plants with THC levels above that 0.3% threshold. While each type has its own benefits, full-spectrum products are legally regulated and can have intoxicating effects. Find more information on the differences between broad-spectrum and full-spectrum products here. Bōdee Organics products are only derived from hemp.

Myth: CBD is Legal in All 50 States

This one’s a little complicated. The 2018 Farm Bill was undoubtedly a big win for CBD. The bill legalized hemp-derived CBD and allowed licensed companies to distribute their CBD products across state lines. But it doesn’t mean the country was transformed into a CBD free-for-all: The bill allows states to individually create stricter laws. While most states have legalized CBD under Farm Bill rules, there are a few outliers: Nebraska, Idaho and South Dakota. For example, in Nebraska, all CBD is illegal and anyone selling CBD may be prosecuted. If you’re uncertain about your state’s laws, make sure you fully understand what is allowed – and what isn’t – before buying a CBD product. This is only a sampling of the misinformation rampant on the internet about CBD. As always, do your research before purchasing a CBD product and shop with reputable companies that prioritize quality and safety.
